We are very pleased to inform you that the Members of the Executive Council who were present at the meeting on 21 November, unanimously elected as its new Chair The Rt Hon the Lord Mance, Justice of the United Kingdom Supreme Court. Lord Mance has accepted this appointment enthusiastically and his term of office commenced on 21 November 2009.
Lord Mance has a special interest in international affairs. He was the first chairman of the Council of Europe’s Consultative Council of European Judges
(CCJE) and he continues to represent the UK on the CCJE. He is a trustee of the European Law Academy. He is a member of the United Nations supported Judicial Integrity Group.
He is an adviser to the ILA Study Group on the Practice and Procedure of International Courts and Tribunals which has produced the Burgh House Principles on the Independence of the International Judiciary, and which is currently working on draft Principles concerning the Professional Conduct of Counsel and Advisers in Proceedings before International Courts and Tribunals.
He was appointed to the Court of Appeal of England and Wales in 1999, having been a judge of the Queen’s Bench Division from 1993, sitting in each court in both civil and criminal cases, but at first instance primarily in the Commercial Court.
We look forward very much to working with him and hope you will meet him in 2010 at the Executive Council meeting on 8 May or at the ILA2010 Conference in The Hague from 15-19 August.
