ILA Committee Meeting on Sustainable Resources Management: Sustainability, Natural Resources & International Law

Preceding the 78th Biennial Conference of the International Law Association (ILA) Conference in Sydney in August 2018, the ILA Committee on Sustainable Resources Management will take place in Cambridge, UK on 27 – 28 April 2018. The meeting will focus on the role of international law in sustainable resources management, bringing together nearly 40 international law experts. The Faculty of Law, and Lauterpacht Centre for International Law will host the event.

The importance of natural resources to global economic growth means that disputes over the control and exploitation of natural resources have become ubiquitous: triggering social unrest, political instability, and even armed conflict. At the same time, the exhaustion of natural resources is inherently linked to environmental degradation, poverty and human rights violations. These issues make the effective governance and management of natural resources a pressing international concern.

In this event, two interactive sessions consider the international legal framework governing natural resources. The first expert panel addresses the principles of sustainable use of natural resources in international law and the second panel considers the rules and practices of international law for sustainable resources management.

These international experts panels offer an opportunity for practitioners, academics and students to have an in-depth discussion on these challenges with worldclass international legal experts from the ILA in hope of fostering research collaboration, dissemination and knowledge transfer.
