Global Health Law proposals to UN High Level Panel
Global Health Law proposals to UN High Level Panel
On February 19, 2016, the Global Health Law Committee submitted two proposals to the United Nations High Level Panel on Access to Medicines in response to its call for submissions. The HLP will finalize a report and recommendations to the UN Secretary General in June 2016. The first proposal by the GHLC relates to establishment of an Essential Medicines Patent Pool. The second proposal involves a Framework Convention on Pharmaceutical Innovation and Its Related Protocols. Frederick Abbott, co-chair of the GHLC, is also a member of the UN Expert Advisory Group appointed to assist the High Level Panel.
The GHLC will meet in London on March 11, 2016 at the headquarters of The Lancet. Committee members will discuss papers they are preparing as part of the Committee’s work program and report for the August 2016 ILA biennial in Johannesburg. The meeting will include a substantive program on a number of topics, including follow-up on global health security issues (noting growing attention to the nexus between sustainable development and health security), as well as the forthcoming HLP report.
