Nigerian Branch Launch
The Nigerian Branch of the International Law Association successfully held its inaugural annual conference on October 28, 2014 at Raddison Blu Hotel, Victoria Island, Lagos, Nigeria. Themed “International Investments in an Era of Terrorism and Transnational Threats: Taking Stock and Charting International Law Responses for the Future." the event was a high-level gathering of eminent international and Nigerian scholars.
The Branch’s President Prof Fidelis Oditah QC, SAN was on hand to welcome delegates to the conference to the present the keynote speaker Prof. Maurice Mendelson Q.C.- Master of the Bench of Lincoln's Inn, Barrister and Solicitor, Blackstone Chambers and member of the British Branch of the ILA. The event was chaired by The Hon. Aloma Mariam Mukhtar, GCON the Chief Justice of the Federal Republic of Nigeria who expressed absolute delight to be able to finally inaugurate the Nigerian Branch of the International Law Association (ILA), 28 years after the first attempt to institutionalize it in the country failed.
The Conference also featured responses from Nigerian scholars and panel of discussants who brought diverse perspectives on how to tackle the problem of terrorism in Nigeria. The Panel discussion and response sessions featured eminent members of the Nigerian legal community including the Hon. Justice Nwali Sylvester Ngwuta JSC, CFR - Hon. Justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria, Hon. Justice Sidi Dauda Bage- Justice of the Court of Appeal of Nigeria, Dr. Olufemi Elias-Legal Adviser and Director of the Office of the Legal Adviser, Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, Hague, Netherlands, Chief Bayo Ojo SAN- Former Honorable Minister for Justice and Attorney General of Nigeria, DR. Joy Ngozi Ezeilo OON- Former United Nations Rapporteur on Women Trafficking, Mr. Adeola Rahman Ipaye- Hon. Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Lagos State, Nigeria Mrs. Funke Adekoya SAN, Former Vice President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Prof. Yinka Omorogbe- Nabo Graham Douglas Distinguished Professor, Nigerian Institute of Advanced Legal Studies, Lagos Nigeria, Dr. Fabian Ajogwu SAN: Senior Partner in the law firm of Kenna Partners and Dr. Adesegun Akin-Olugbade, OON- Patron and Life Member, Nigerian Branch of the ILA.
