Presentation of the first PhD award of the French branch of the International Law Association (ILA)

On May 30th, 2017, the French Branch of the International Law Association, chaired by Prof. Catherine Kessedjian, attended a conference on the recent developments of the Law of the sea by Judge Jean-Pierre Cot (ITLOS) and Prof. Mathias Forteau (Paris Nanterre University), at the office of Kramer Levin, following the invitation of Mr. Jean-Pierre Mattout.

Afterwards, the French branch awarded its first PhD award to Dr. Andréas Kallergis for his thesis "La compétence fiscale" (Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne University, December 14th, 2016) supervised by Prof. Ludovic Ayrault.

The award was presented by Judge Jean-Pierre Cot and Jury Chairperson Jean-Pierre Mattout (Kramer Levin). Prof. Franck Latty (Paris Nanterre University) and Sylvaine Poillot-Peruzzetto (Special Counsellor at the French Court of Cassation) were also members of the jury.

In his speech prior to the ceremony, Mr. Mattout stressed that the competition was fierce as all the candidates’ thesis deserved praise. He emphasized the contribution of Dr. Kallergis’ work to legal debates. The jury’s objective was to reward a substantial research on a decisive subject, which had not been studied up to now.

Created in 2017, the Phd award of the French branch of the ILA rewards a doctoral thesis on a subject situated at the crossroads of public international law, private international law and / or transnational law.
