The ILA Belgian Branch held a Lecture on International Trade in a Changing Landscape on 27 November 2018
The ILA Belgian Branch and the Brussels Diplomatic Academy held a lecture on International Trade in a Changing Landscape. The speaker was Professor Ricardo Ramírez Hernández, VUB Fellow and Former Member of the Appellate Body, World Trade Organisation, Professor of International Trade Law, National Autonomous University Mexico
This was followed by a panel discussion with Professor Ricardo Ramírez Hernández, Professor Marco Bronckers (University of Leiden), Roberto Reyes Barrera (Vrije Universiteit Brussel) and chaired by Prof. Dr. Kim Van der Borght, Chair Asia-Pacific Studies, Vrije Universiteit Brussel, President of the Belgian Branch of the International Law Association
The event took place at Vrije Universiteit Brussel, Pleinlaan 2, 1050 Brussels in Promotiezaal D.2.01.
There was a good attendance with a mixed audience of ILA members and non-members, including academics, trade lawyers, trade diplomats, officials for the European Commission and master students from the law programme and the Brussels Diplomatic Academy. There were about 50 people.
The talk was a critical yet constructive review of the immediate challenges faced by the international trading system, including the WTO dispute settlement system as well as a long-view of the changes in our societies as a result of innovation, climate change, and other challenges and the impact this will have on the international trade law.
The Q&A explored the current trade war issues from various perspectives and explored various ways of responding to the challenge posed by current US trade policy and the role of China PRC.
