ILA Young Scholars & Practitioners

ILA Scholarship Fund

The ILA has established a Scholarship Fund to help graduate and postgraduate students and early career professionals attend the ILA Regional or Biennial Conferences. While no age limit defines the category of ‘young’ Scholar or practitioner, the ILA aims to welcome participants of all ages interested in international law, including younger persons, thereby investing in the Association’s future and providing opportunities within the sector.

The ILA Scholarship funds provides financial support to Scholars who cannot access other sources of funding to enable them to attend the conferences. By participating in the ILA Regional or Biennial International Law Conferences, younger persons can enhance their research (graduate or post-graduate) or early careers through active participation and networking.

The ILA Scholarship fund also increases the visibility of the ILA by attracting persons who would not otherwise have known its work, particularly in countries where the ILA is under or not represented at all thereby expanding participation outside more traditional circles.

Since its was established in 2014, the Scholarship Fund has facilitated the participation of 74 individuals in Regional and Biennial conferences. The most recent recipients have just been announced and will attend the 81st Biennial International Law Conference which will place in Athens, Greece in June 2024:

  1. Ms Manga Marie Claire Douala (Cameroon)
  2. Ms Annika Fuchs (German)
  3. Mr Ng'essan Clement Kouame (Cote d'Ivoire)
  4. Ms Micha Schwartzshtein (Brazil)
  5. Ms Axana Soltan (Afghanistan)
  6. Ms Jacqueline St Laurent (Peru)
  7. Mr Sam Van der Vlugt (The Netherlands)

The next round of ILA Scholarships will be awarded in advance of the 82nd Biennial International Law Conference to be held in Vienna, Austria in 2026. Please check this page for updates on the process and the Call for Candidates which will be issued in late 2025.
